Somewhere, back about 40 years ago, I wanted to try my hand at photojournalism. That never really came to pass, it was harder to get published before the Internet came along and as for getting a paycheck, well, you needed to be hired and that meant you needed formal training in journalism to get the job.
I have tried various forms of writing over the years, but I can’t say I was much good at it until the computer age came along. I bought my first computer in late 1992, it was a 486DX2/33 that I eventually upgraded to a 486DX2/66. I ran 3 operating systems on that machine with 2 Megs of RAM. Good old DOS that I used to do system maintenance, Windows 3.11 that was a frustration because it kept crashing and I ran IBM’s OS/2 ver. 3 Warp, Warp had a configuration file that was over 200 lines long, but I was able to set it up and it ran flawlessly for 4 years with Maximus BBS software. That is a Bulletin Board System for those too young to have been there. I was connected to over 40,000 other computers around the globe and I had 350 registered users at the board’s peak. It was one heck of a learning curve and of course, I needed help at first. Another Sysop (System operator as we were called) gave me lessons and helped make the board run. BBS’s were the original internet, not like today’s of course, but we had the original E-mail, shareware and freeware to download and a multitude of text based games to play. My BBS ran from Halloween 1992 until September 1996 and the beginning of the Web, the internet killed the BBS networks.
So here I sit today, I get published once a week, more if I think I have something to say. I’m still not an actual “photojournalist”, but I like to think I have carved out my own niche in Daily Kos. I want to thank everyone in the Insomniacs' Late Night Vent Hole, for letting me rant in the early days, encouraging me to write more often and a special thanks to Man Oh Man for letting me have his weekly spot to publish. Writing here means more to me than I can describe to you, I almost feel like my life has had a meaning, as small as it might be, and my diaries will out live me longer than anything else I have done. Thanks to all of you!
Who is talking to who.
SPOILER WARNING: A late night gathering for non-serious palaver that does not speak of that night's show. Posting a spoiler will get your brolly whacked. You don't want that to happen to you.
